RPS Group was appointed to design and deliver a rooftop solar pv system for Middlefields Waste Transfer Station through the NEPO Decarbonisation Framework.
Operated by South Tyneside Council, Middlefields Waste Transfer Station plays a vital role in helping local residents recycle and dispose of waste responsibly. The site was identified as part of the Council’s wider commitment to cutting carbon emissions and reaching carbon neutrality by 2030.
The main challenge of this contract was completing the installation whilst the waste facility remained fully operational. Delivery was carefully planned around live operations to ensure recycling and waste transfer activities continued without disruption. In total we installed 1144 solar panels across the available roof space.

The new solar pv system at Middlefields Waste Transfer Station will generate around 465,000 kWh of clean electricity each year, avoiding more than 90 tonnes of carbon annually supporting South Tyneside Council’s Net Zero targets.
