Salford City Council has an estate of over 170 buildings and in July 2019 they declared a Climate Emergency, stating its commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2038.
Beesley Green Community Centre is a single-story structure situated in the conservation area in Roe and is surrounded by the woodlands of Worsley Woods. The building has been in situ since 1892 and for the most part remains the same as construction. Used by community groups including mother & baby, childrens drama classes and a range of local exercise classes- the community centre has recently benefitted from Decarbonisation works undertaken by RPS.
This project is a part of Salford City Councils Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme 3 to decarbonise the heating on its estate.
Removal of existing traditional gas boilers and replacement with new Mitsubishi CAHV ASHPS
Full-scale removal and replacement of existing pipework, radiators, and fan convectors – chosen for their compatibility with the ASHPs
Installation of a new Building Management System to include remote monitoring and verification capabilities
Upgrade to existing incoming electrical mains and distribution boards to accommodate new ASHPs
Replacement of windows and doors with new energy-efficient alternatives – all within the restrictions of the Conservation area
The project entailed the full technical design and specification of ASHPs, which have been designed to give optimum performance, to replace the existing gas boilers This is in addition to the design, procure, install, and testing of building fabric improvements to improve energy efficiency. RPS also provide warranty and maintenance post-commissioning. The retrofitting of heat pump systems has created not only a more efficient and decarbonised heating system but also a more comfortable environment for users of Beesley Green Community Centre.
